Two more cannons discovered at Fort Cornwallis
Two cannons were accidentally unearthed during restoration and upgrading work on the seawall near Fort Cornwallis here.
The Bloomfeld cannons weigh 3 tonnes each and measure about 3m to 3.6m in length.
They are the fifth and sixth cannons to be discovered since restoration work began on Fort Cornwallis in 2017.
According to National Heritage Department Heritage Commissioner, Mesran Mohd Yusop, the department and Universiti Sains Malaysia's Centre for Global Archaeological Research (CGAR) would be cooperating in preserving the latest finds.
"For the time being, these cannons will remain here until further stages of research are completed so that we can see the context of the site as a whole," he said during a press conference at Esplanade on Friday (Jan 3).
He added that the discovery could help educate the public on the importance of history and national heritage.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow and Secretary-General of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (Motac) Datuk Dr Noor Zari Hamat were also present during the press conference.

All things Thai at Fort Cornwallis
FORT Cornwallis in Penang boasts of a rich historical legacy but this weekend, it will celebrate a first by playing host to a Thai food and culture festival.
The Thai Food, Fruits and Cultural Festival will be held at the fort from 10am to 11pm today and tomorrow.
It is jointly organised by the Penang Govern-ment and Thai Consulate-General of Penang.
Penang Tourism Development and Culture Committee chairman Danny Law said visitors to the fair would be able to sample Thai cul-ture through their dances, martial arts and food.
“The public will get the opportunity to experience authentic culinary traditions and cuisines of Thailand.
“On top of that, a few entertaining perfor- mances of Thailand’s delicate and graceful traditional dances as well as its well-known kick-boxing national sport — Muay Thai — will be showcased,” Law told press conference on Thursday.
He said visitors and tourists should try their best to be present for the festival’s opening ceremony at 6.30pm today as there would be a Klong Yao (long Thai Style drum made of hardwood) performance and Thai cul- tural dances.
He said there would also be traditional massages offered at stalls. Admission to the festival is free.

A FEAST of flavours and traditions from the Land of Smiles awaits visitors at the Thai Food, Fruits and Cultural Festival 2010 at Fort Cornwallis on Aug 7 and 8.
Jointly organised by the Penang Government and the Royal Thai Consulate-General of Penang, the two-day event from 9am to 11pm daily, will feature lots of Thai musical and dance performances as well as its most popular cuisine and produce.
“Thai food is one of the most famous cuisines in the world, enjoyed by both locals and foreigners. There will be almost 40 traders taking part,” state Tourism Development and Culture Committee chairman Danny Law Heng Kiang told a press conference here on Wednesday.
According to Thai Consul-General Voradet Viravakin, there will also be a Muay Thai demonstration by USM students, in addition to cultural showcases by students of Thaksin University in Thailand.
“These themed performances will be interesting and entertaining. The lights and sounds are very lively.
“There will also be an emcee to guide the audience along in both Thai and English,” Viravakin said, adding that the performers would comprise both professionals and amateurs.
He also praised the local government for their continued support in enhancing bilateral relations, saying that the best way to strengthen ties between the two nations was through people to people contact.
“Moreover, tourism has changed. Visitors don’t just come to one destination alone, as most prefer to visit a cluster of a few places at once.
“Tourists who visit Southern Thailand will want to visit Penang and vice versa. It’s a win-win situation and both countries benefit,” Viravakin added.
