Wet wild fun in the open sea
The first water theme park in Penang, Wet World Wild in Moonlight Bay, Batu Ferringhi, officially opens to the public today.
Touted as the first-of-its-kind open sea adventure park in Asia, the latest tourist attraction is set to be a hit among local and overseas visitors.
It features some 10 inflatable obstacles with the main activities involving rock climbing, running track, trampoline, swings, slides and human catapult.
A check by Streets yesterday showed many visitors flocking to the venue to enjoy themselves at the water theme park ahead of its soft opening.
Fida Mohd Ali, 35, and her family members were ecstatic to get the chance to enjoy the thrills at the park.
"We are a big fan of water theme parks and I am happy Penangites now do not have to travel far to enjoy them.
"The obstacles are physically challenging, it took us a while to get our footing on the float structures," said Fida.
Park manager Jackie Tsng said undersea netting were set up as a perimeter off the shoreline to ward off the jellyfish threat.
"We have installed a 400m-long netting to ensure that no jellyfish can intrude into the water theme park.
"We chose Moonlight Bay due to the calm waters here," Tsng said, adding that the theme park was supposed to open in September but was delayed due to the relocation of the venue from Bayu Senja.
Meanwhile, Wet World Wild regional account director Melvin Kuo said no jet skis would be allowed in the area for public safety.
"The park caters for non-motorised watersport, so visitors can have peace of mind while enjoying all the fun-filled family activities.
"Six lifeguards are on duty. We will deploy up to 10 lifeguards on weekends and public holidays," said Kuo.
He said the water park would be closed during inclement weather and choppy waves.
The water theme park is open from 9am to 7pm daily. Admission fee is tentatively fixed at RM40 per adult and RM30 per child.
Visitors will be allowed to use its facilities for a maximum of two hours on weekends and public holidays.
The structures were made in Germany and the current set-up is the first phase of the project.
The RM3 million theme park is the brainchild of Theme Park Concepts & Services Sdn Bhd in collaboration with the Penang Global Tourism Board.
There are five phases of the project which will be completed in one year.

Take safety seriously

TOURISTS are shocked over the latest accident on Batu Ferringhi beach and want the Penang Government to be more stringent in controlling sports activities there.
Ruslam Zakaria, from Kuala Lumpur, described the incident as a hit-and-run version on the beach as the horse rider just galloped away after knocking down five-year-old Arina Kirana Azrin yesterday morning.
He said he was taking pictures on the beach when he saw a horse ridden by a man running away from two Penang Municipal Council enforcement officers.
“The horse was galloping very fast when it knocked down a girl who was playing with sand,” he said.
Arina, who suffered a fracture to the left collarbone, was first sent to a clinic before being admitted to the Penang Hospital.
Ruslam, 46, said he would now have to think of the safety of water sports activities on the beach first before trying them out as his daughter was interested in a horse ride before the accident.
He was apparently unaware of a ban on horse riding and quad-biking on the beach which came into effect in January.
“I hope the girl is fine in the hospital now as I can’t imagine if this happened to my daughters,” said the father-of-two.
Australian tourist Arthur Paikos, 61, who has been visiting Penang since 1980, said he was disappointed to learn about the accident as he heard that a Chinese national was rammed by a water scooter during his last trip here on February.
It was reported that Zhu Li, 47, broke both her legs after being rammed by a water scooter while she was taking a walk on the beach on Feb 24.
“I thought the enforcement unit would have taken stern action to handle the issue of illegal operators after that accident and was surprised to hear another case happening again,” Arthur said.
He said the state government should demarcate a specific area for water sports activities like what some other countries are doing.
Arthur’s wife, Heather, 57, said she did not dare to take a stroll on the beach now as she was afraid that a pack of dogs there might attack her.
“The beach is so messy and dirty,” she added.
Another Australian, Craig Dunstan, 29, who is on his sixth vacation in Penang, said the authorities should look into the matter more seriously before it became critical.
“The relevant authority must carry out strict enforcement before people start saying that the beach in Penang is dangerous which will be damaging and a bad reputation for the tourism industry here,” he said.
Other accidents which occurred at the beach included that involving seven-year-old Rina Aizawa from Japan who was playing on the beach when a parasailing rope hooked her neck, lifting her off the ground and dragging her for a short distance last Dec 24.
She sustained laceration on her neck. The incident also left her traumatised.

Skateboarders to show off at Galaxie contest
CALLING skateboarders seeking a platform to pit their skills against some of the best.
Registration for the X-Games (Go-Skate) competition is open to avid skateboarders to gauge their standard among peers at the upcoming Galaxie & Youth Carnival 2011 next month.
Skateboarding will make its debut at the festival, which will be held at Penang Times Square on April 9 and April 10.
Extreme Sports Association Malaysia (ESAM) committee member Ahmad Fuaad Mokhtar urged skateboarders to grab the opportunity and take part in the competition as such contests were hard to come by.
He said budding skateboarders who craved for action should not miss the event.
“They can have a chance to rub shoulders with some of the best,” he said, adding that 36 participants had confirmed their participation so far.
“Besides Penang, we also have contestants coming from neighbouring states such as Kedah, Perlis, Perak, Perlis, Selangor and Kuala Lumpur.”
Ahmad Fuaad said ESAM would provide judges and technical experts for the competition on April 9 while more than 150 skateboarders were scheduled to give a demonstration the following day.
The top three winners will take home RM1,500, RM600 and RM400 respectively.
Ahmad Fuaad, who will be one of the judges, has offered some pointers for those who wish to excel in the sport.
“Check out video clips and see what’s the latest tricks available online.
“Master the tricks through long hours of practice. There is no short cut,” he added.
Other exciting activities at the carnival are Talent Search, The George Town Amazing Race, Street Dance Competition, Shoe Painting, Paintball Target Shooting and Cosplay.
Entry forms are available at The Star offices in Bayan Lepas, Jalan Mesjid Kapitan Keling and Bandar Sunway, Seberang Jaya.
