Grand Chap Goh Meh do

CHAP Goh Meh, the 15th day of the first lunar month, will be celebrated on a grand scale in Penang with an event called ‘My Penang CNY Reunion’ at the Esplanade on Saturday and Sunday.

Visitors will be entertained by concerts and lion dances. A fireworks display, food bazaar and night bazaar will be held as well as the throwing of mandarin oranges, There will be lucky prize give-aways every 30 minutes.

It will be held from 5pm onwards on both days and entrance is at RM28 per person inclusive of passes to the concerts and outdoor party, prize giveaway voucher and a free drink.

The performers include Taiwanese celebrities like the rock duo Y2J, Cindy Wu and Genie a.k.a. Wendy Guo.

Penang Tourism Development, Culture and Arts Committee chairman Danny Law Heng Kiang said the throwing of mandarin oranges or tim kam was a long-time tradition of Penang.

He said the celebration was aimed at positioning Penang in the hearts and minds of the public.

My FM DJs and local celebrities like Danell Lee, Thomas & Jack, Astro Star Quest’s Alvin, Juztin Lan Kah Fai and Ah Yoke as well as Astro Battleground Dancers ‘Katoon Network’ are scheduled to perform on Feb 27.

On Feb 28, the action includes a Schooldays Reunion Outdoor Party by Red FM where music of the 80s and 90s will bring back schoolday memories. There will also be fireworks, a lion dance and a surprise performance that night.

My Penang CNY Reunion is organised by the state tourism development office, radio station My FM and Go International Group.

Tickets are available from 11am to 4pm at the Ko-Ai bak hu stall on Lorong Selamat; 12pm to 6pm at G Hotel, A2 Gallery in Bangkok Lane, Guang Ming Daily office on Macalister Road and Queensbay Mall tourism booth; 8pm to 11pm at Crepe Cottage at Gurney Drive and 8pm to 2am at selected outlets at Upper Penang Road.
